Treemendous School Makeovers

Project Crimson

The Treemendous School Makeovers programme is in its 10th year of encouraging environmental education in schools and the wider community.

The programme, which offers native garden makeovers to all primary and intermediate schools in New Zealand, has been hugely successful in increasing native planting in our schools and providing ongoing learning in outdoor classrooms.

An enduring partnership between business and conservation, the programme is supported by Mazda New Zealand, and inspires students by biodiversity conservation in action at their own school.

By the end of this year the programme will have completed 44 makeovers with $10,000 given to each school to bring their plans to life with the help of the Project Crimson Trust.

More than 5,000 people have been involved planting more than 25,000 plants, and creating many insect habitats, worm farms, bird feeders, lizard gardens, weta hotels, outdoor stages and classrooms.

Now the group is looking at ways of rolling out the programme to large-scale restoration projects in the school areas, bringing their learnings to the extended community to improve the wider landscape.
